Selected students applying for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for 2026–27 have until September 30, 2026 to submit their applications. Families also need to track two later verification deadlines: submitting a form is only one stage of the process.
The Ministry of Education announced the extension on September 1. This is a reminder about an approaching deadline, rather than a new extension announced today. Read the official notice.

Who the scheme is for
The award is ₹12,000 a year. Fresh scholarships are for selected Class IX students who clear the State/UT selection examination; renewals cover Classes X–XII subject to academic conditions. The notice specifies government, government-aided and local-body schools, parental annual income up to ₹3.5 lakh, and selection-test eligibility of at least 55% in Class VII, with a five-percentage-point relaxation for SC/ST students.
The ministry requires selected applicants to complete one-time registration before applying on the National Scholarship Portal. An account or registration alone is not a scholarship application.
A practical checklist before September 30
First, identify your application route. Ask the school to confirm whether you are handling a fresh award or renewal. Do not assume that a deadline extension replaces the selection examination or makes every student eligible.
Second, compare your records. Set aside a quiet session with the student and a parent or guardian. Compare the name, school details and other entries against the documents you are using. Resolve discrepancies through the school or the portal’s official assistance channels instead of guessing.
Third, keep evidence of submission. Save the application reference and a dated copy of the confirmation privately. A screenshot of a half-filled form will not tell you later whether the final submission succeeded.
Fourth, follow up with the school. Keep a note of who handles scholarship verification and when you checked the status. If the application is awaiting action, ask which stage is pending. The October dates are verification deadlines, not extra time for students to start applying.
