Before paying a website to obtain an MSME certificate, check the official Udyam portal. Government registration is free, and the portal explicitly warns visitors about imitation sites. For a small business, the first useful step is choosing the correct official route and checking the information it will use.
The Ministry of MSME’s Udyam website is the source for the registration process described here. This guide reflects information checked on September 24, 2026; it is not an announcement of a new fee waiver.

The MSME classification limits
The revised limits took effect on April 1, 2025. The ministry’s 2025–26 annual report records that change. Both the investment and turnover criteria matter:
| Classification | Investment ceiling | Annual turnover ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
A turnover number by itself is therefore not a complete classification check. For example, saying that a firm has ₹8 crore turnover does not establish whether it fits the micro category without checking the relevant investment measure.
What the official process says
The portal describes registration as online, paperless and based on self-declaration, with no document uploads required for registration. It uses Aadhaar and applicable PAN/GST information; tax-linked investment and turnover details are drawn from government databases. The site also says a registration does not need renewal, and multiple manufacturing or service activities can be included in one registration.
A checklist for the business owner
- Check the address. Start from udyamregistration.gov.in rather than a sponsored result with a similar name.
- Check whether you already have a registration. Use the portal’s existing-registration or migration route where applicable; do not start a duplicate just because someone offers a new certificate.
- Prepare consistent details. Compare the business name, ownership information and tax records you will use. Ask the official help channel about a mismatch rather than entering an approximation.
- Review the activity description. Make sure it reflects the work the enterprise actually does, including any additional activities that belong in the same registration.
- Store the outcome safely. Keep the certificate and registration number in the business’s records, with access for the person responsible for administration.
Registration is not the same as a benefit approval
Treat the certificate as one part of your business records. If you are applying for a loan, subsidy or tender, read that programme’s separate eligibility and documentation requirements. Do not budget on a promised payment solely because a third party says an MSME certificate guarantees it.
For help with the process, follow the facilitation and grievance links on the official portal. This checklist explains the public information; business-specific tax or classification questions should be resolved against the applicable rules and your actual records.
